Book of Mormon Challenge to Myself and Anyone That Wants To Join Me!

" Have ye received his image in your countenances? Have ye experienced this mighty change in your heart?"
Alma 5:14

coun·te·nance Origin: 1250–1300; ME cuntenaunce behavior, bearing, self-control

Does my behavior reflect that I have experienced this mighty change of heart? No, I don't break the 10 Commandments, but I don't consistently do what I know I should be doing. (Does this sound familiar: "It's too hard to do all of that stuff." - see 1 Nephi 16:1)

That being said, it is time to submerge myself in the Book of Mormon. What better way to do this than to read it in 31 days! I decided I have a lot of time to *read* right now... There is no reason I can't add the Book of Mormon to my current reading selection. As I've mentioned before, I have the laptop set up next to the rocking chair so I am reading it on my computer (and surprisingly, it seems less overwhelming this way!). You can also download the audio as well. Here is the link.

I've challenged Aaron to join me (heck, if he can read a Harry Pooper book in 2 days, he could read the B of M in 31!). It comes to approximately 20 pages a day to read. Aaron timed himself reading just 5 pages last night. It only took 12 minutes for him. He is going to split that up through out the day and try to keep up with me.
Here is the schedule!
  1. Title page – “A Brief Explanation about The Book of Mormon”
  2. 1 Nephi 1 - 11
  3. 1 Nephi 12 - 17
  4. 1 Nephi 18 - 2 Nephi 2
  5. 2 Nephi 3 - 9
  6. 2 Nephi 10 - 23
  7. 2 Nephi 24 - 29
  8. 2 Nephi 30 - Jacob 5
  9. Jacob 6 - Mosiah 1
  10. Mosiah 2 - 8
  11. Mosiah 9 - 17
  12. Mosiah 18 - 26
  13. Mosiah 27 - Alma 3
  14. Alma 4 - 9
  15. Alma 10 - 15
  16. Alma 16 - 22
  17. Alma 23 - 30
  18. Alma 31 - 36
  19. Alma 37 - 43
  20. Alma 44 - 50
  21. Alma 51 - 57
  22. Alma 58 - 63
  23. Helaman 1 - 7
  24. Helaman 8 - 14
  25. Helaman 15 - 3 Nephi 6
  26. 3 Nephi 7 - 14
  27. 3 Nephi 15 - 22
  28. 3 Nephi 23 - Mormon 2
  29. Mormon 3 - Ether 2
  30. Ether 3 - 12
  31. Ether 13 - Moroni 10

Are you in??? Post a comment, and/or complete the poll! Be honest - if you can't handle it right now (heavens knows that's how I've been up until now), then just say it! I decided now is the time... things will start to get much busier in the coming months (football, preschool, school, OYF bookkeeping...). There is no time like the present!

Invite your friends and family to join you! Feel free to link to my blog...

I'm doing this publicly because I think I will be held more accountable if everyone knows I'm doing it. Don't want to fail on this one!

THE BEHAVIOR CHANGE BEGINS JULY 15TH!!!!

I'm in Cathy, I too need some help to get me to read. I don't have as much time to read since the babies are almost weaned (hallejuah!) but I'm going to give it a shot!!!

Hi Cathy,
You don't know me but I just stumbled onto your blog from Stephanie's blog. So many of us want to be better just because of Camille's story. Unfortunately, wanting to be better is not enough for me without ACTION! This would be so great & so inspiring to do with others (even though I don't know the "others"). I feel like dedicating my reading to Camille & to my own children. I won't just be a better person after reading the BOM again, I'll be a better mom. Thanks! Lori

Marji - I'm so happy you are taking it on!

Lori - Great comments! I haven't even been able to put all of my thoughts into words after reading Stephanie's blog. I do know that I have to share it with others though... Thanks for joining me!

This is great, Cathy! I've listened to the audio version of The Book of Mormon twice. I love it! Right now I'm listening to it in Spanish, which has been perfect as I've been taking an unofficial Spanish class (although it's on hold for the summer) for the past few months. I'm in Mosiah right now but am not working to have it all done in 31 days. So you'll eventually pass me.

Good luck!

Thank you for this challenge Cathy. I will set a date for my challenge, and begin. I remember the very first time I read the Book of Mormon all by myself. I was so proud of myself. When I told my niece that I had finally done it, she said, "I just finished it too, it took me 60 days." She was 10. Totally took the wind out of my sails. I really do want to do this.

Day one done Cathy plus I have recruited my 9 year old son, Josh, to do the challenge with me. He did his reading as well. I am SO EXCITED to do this with him. What a bonding experience this will be.

P.S. Mormon is to Vader as Moroni is to Luke!
That's all I have to add

Cathy. Hi, it's Kelli Johnson from SLC. You linked to my blog through friends and family and came along the BOM Challenge. I just wanted to say thanks for the post. It made my day. This challenge is kind like the "Pay It Forward" theory. I hope all is going well with your reading and that you are finding much spiritual enrichment. Good luck on your pregnancy! Six - you're pretty much amazing! I am due in 3 weeks with #2.

Thanks again for the post!!!

Oops - I misunderstood...you just HAD your 6th child. Pregnancy complete! Misread your comment initially.

How's your reading going Cathy? My son is only reading a chapter a day so he's definitely not going to finish in 30 days, but at least he's reading it. YEAH!! Each day I have him pick a scripture that he feels stands out to him & then highlight it. He then has to tell me why he picked that particular scripture. His sister just got married recently & moved away. He misses her terribly. Today after reading he said, "Mom, when I was reading my scriptures it made me think of Leah & I started to cry." I love that reading them brings thoughts of family to his mind. How precious. I also am still reading. Will I get done in 30 days? Not sure, but I'm trying. Thanks again for the challenge.
